NHIA CEO meets with key stakeholders in Ghana’s Health Service delivery system

Dr. Da-costa Aboagye, the NHIA CEO, and his Executive Management team have met with the leadership of Ghana Health Service (GHS) and the Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG).

The meeting which was held at the premises of the GHS office, dissected several issues that are critical to sanitizing the healthcare delivery space in Ghana.

The meeting strategized on how all stakeholders could jointly address and eliminate the canker of illegal charges being demanded from vulnerable NHIS Members and pledged to work assiduously to rectify the situation in the shortest possible time. Key interventions were discussed in this regard and all parties agreed to a tentative road map to solve the conundrum that has persisted for several years.

Illegal charges against NHIS Members were generally agreed as an unacceptable phenomenon that erodes confidence in the NHIS and sometimes borders on the professional integrity and morals of some health service providers. Dr. Patrick Aboagye, the Director General of the Ghana Health Service praised the approach of the new NHIA CEO and prayed for such meetings to discuss pertinent and thorny issues in the space.

Dr. Peter Yeboah, Executive Director, CHAG on his part outlined some pragmatic areas that the NHIA must tackle to make the Scheme more efficient and responsive to its members. He emphasized the need for deeper stakeholder engagements with the political class, clergy, and traditional authority to increase their understanding of the Scheme’s progress and to secure their buy-in, ownership, and joint continuous monitoring for efficiency and operational excellence.

Dr. Da-Costa Aboagye on his part thanked the participants of the meeting for a fruitful and progressive discussion and seized the occasion to outline his vision to address the key challenges affecting the Scheme. His overall objective is to eliminate illegal charges and make the Scheme more attractive by offering some preventive and promotive packages in the benefit package that may help spot some disease conditions at an early stage for effective management which will ultimately reduce the huge medical bills the NHIS pays overtime.
Also in attendance were the Deputy Chief Executive for Admin / HR, Dr. Mrs. Yaa Pokuaa Baiden, Deputy Chief Executive Operations, Mrs. Louisa Atta-Agyemang, Mr. Oswald Essuah-Mensah, Ag.
