NPP flagbearer race: I’m reasonably confident of winning – Bawumia

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is optimistic about winning the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential primaries.

However, he is aware that man proposes, but God disposes, therefore, he left the election in the hands of God.

“I’m reasonably confident of winning. But it’s in God’s hands,” the Vice President said after casting his ballot at the NPP Headquarters on Saturday, November 4, 2023

There are four contenders for the position of NPP flagbearer, including Bawumia. The other contenders are former Mampong MP Francis Addai-Nimoh, former Agriculture Minister Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, and Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong.

A poll conducted by the Institute of Research Innovation & Development at the Kumasi Technical Universit placed Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in a comfortable lead.

The poll points out that Dr. Bawumia is more poised to secure overwhelming support in eight regions.

The poll engaged 15,595 NPP delegates, considering key factors such as unifying qualities, visible leadership, and the ability to break the “8,” along with non-policy factors like religion and ethnicity.

The findings reveal that 71.1% of respondents have strong faith in Dr. Bawumia and are more likely to break the “8,” while Kennedy Agyapong stands a 26.8%.

Meanwhile, in terms of unifying qualities, 69.9% described Dr. Bawumia as the most unifying, while 19.4% attributed this quality to Kennedy Agyapong. Regarding visible leadership qualities, 70.5% of delegates chose Dr. Bawumia, with 19.4% favoring Kennedy Agyapong.

The poll by the Institute of Research Innovation & Development at the Kumasi Technical University also tackled the influence of religion and ethnicity on voting choices.

While 13.4% considered religion, 86.4% did not. Similarly, 13.8% would strongly consider ethnicity, while 86.2% would not factor it into their decision with the past record being a significant consideration for 97.1% of respondents.
