Parliament tasks 7-member committee to probe leaked IGP tape

A seven-member special committee has been formed by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to look into claims made on a tape that the governing New Patriotic Party intended to remove the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, in order to rig the upcoming 2024 General Elections.

The committee will be established in response to the Minority caucus of Parliament, which demanded a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the veracity and legitimacy of the recording that was released.

Three lawmakers from each side of the house will make up the committee, and they will have the help of a technical specialist for their job.

The Speaker requested that the names of the three members of the Majority and Minority caucuses be released within one week.

Meanwhile, the President Akufo-Addo administration has categorically denied rumors of a covert plot to depose the Inspector General of Police before the 2024 general elections.

Ambrose Dery, the Interior Minister, denied the charges during a news conference in Parliament on Tuesday, encouraging the people to disregard them as untrue and unfounded.

He reiterated that there is no such plot against the Inspector General of Police, highlighting the necessity of maintaining the police force’s integrity and independence during the electoral process.

However, the Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr. Has rubbished the Interior Ministers’ assurance.

Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV on Wednesday, July 12, said Ambrose Dery’s statement does not hold weight.

“These assurances have no value. [They] are meaningless. If Ghana was a serious country those policemen on the tape would be interdicted. We need to take this seriously. It is frightening,” he dispraised.

He also added that the claim that elections have been peaceful since 2016 is untrue as there have been recorded cases of disturbances in some constituencies during elections since 2017.
