Peasant Farmers call for controlled sale of farmlands to estate developers

Peasant Farmer groups in the New Juaben North Municipality of the Eastern Region are urgently appealing to the government to take conscious efforts in securing farmlands for the cultivation of farm produce.

This appeal comes as a crucial step to ensure consistent food safety in the municipality.

The farmers raise concern over the recent indiscriminate sale of farmlands to estate developers, fearing that it could undermine the progress they have made if not addressed promptly.

The recent sales of farmlands at Asokore, Akwadum, Oyoko, Suhyen, and Mpayem to estate developers have been identified by the farmers as a major setback, threatening food security in the municipality.

The Head of Corporate Affairs Alistair Djimatey expressed his worry over how most of the farms they used to feed their company have vanished.

Mr. Djimatey noted that the challenges will negatively impact raw materials and the Ghanaian economy is at risk.

“We have serious challenges when it comes to raw materials especially when it comes to pineapple production. Like I indicated most of the farmlands have disappeared,” he said.

Hajia Habiba Yussif, the Eastern Regional Director of Agriculture, shares the farmers’ concerns and is equally worried about the implications of uncontrolled land sales on food security.
