Road Safety Authority takes action to reduce road crashes and ensure safety

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Ghana’s statutory body for road safety, is on a mission to plan, develop, promote, coordinate, and regulate road safety activities nationwide.

With offices in all 16 regions, NRSA say they are committed to reducing incidents of road traffic crashes, injuries, and deaths (CIDs).

These align with their objective of ensuring accountability on a national scale.

One of the prominent directorates within the NRSA is the Regulations, Inspection, and Compliance (RIC), led by Kwame Kodua Atuahene.

While the NRSA was previously a commission focused on promoting road safety and increasing public awareness, the current Act 993 emphasizes the reduction of road crashes and their devastating consequences.

Kwame Kodua Atuahene, Head of the RIC directorate, highlighted this shift in responsibility.

Interestingly, the Eastern Region, along with Greater Accra and Ashanti, contributes to about 50% of nationwide crashes. Recognizing this, the RIC directorate has concentrated its efforts in the Eastern region. Nana Akua Ansah, the Eastern Regional Head of the NRSA, emphasized the importance of deploying a series of enforcement exercises to combat this road safety challenge.

In line with their commitment, the RIC directorate at the national level collaborated with the Eastern Regional office of the NRSA and the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD). Together, they conducted a three-day enforcement exercise on National Highway 6 (N6) during the Christmas festivities. The focus of the exercise was on ensuring compliance with the two-driver policy, removing unprescribed vehicle lighting (killer lamps), and promoting seatbelt usage.
