Tax on betting a lazy approach to generate revenue – Magoo jabs gov’t

A Communication Team Member of the National Democratic Congress, Margaret Ansei has condemned the government’s decision to tax betting.

She believes it is a lazy approach to generate revenue to finance the government’s expenditure

On Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Monday morning, Madam Ansei expressed shock at the government’s decision wondering why the Akufo-Addo administration that preached anti-taxation while in opposition is the same taxing almost everything including betting.

She, however, proposed that instead of the 10% tax on all winnings, the government should mark a threshold of which bet tax can be collected just like what is practiced in the United Kingdom.

“I expect the government to be rational and reasonable because this is a national security issue and governance and policies are centered on the people. This very government promised the youth of this country not to tax them should they vote for them but if you lie and come to power just to impose higher taxes on the people, the youth are the judge, they are watching.

“They heard the President, his vice, and his campaign team that they were not going to tax Ghanaians, they said the tax is a lazy man’s approach, so they have come to lazy their ways about and tax the youth.” She said.
