2023 BECE begins today

The 2023 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is scheduled to start today, Monday, August 7, across the country.

600, 714 students from 18,993 schools registered for the exams.

The candidates made up of 300,323 males and 300,391 females are the last batch of students writing BECE.

A new examination will be conducted to the first cohort of Junior High School students in 2024, according to a revised curriculum adopted in 2019.

Students will take their Junior High School leaving exams in 2024, which will be based on the new Standard-based curriculum.

This indicates that a new BECE and a new era in student examinations will be introduced in 2024.

The Coalition of Concerned Teachers, however, is urging that the new Standard-based curriculum assessment have a defined path.

The Coalition of Concerned Teachers’ Director of Communications, Adokwei Ayikwie Awule, stated: “We will need a clear path on the Standard-based curriculum examination.”

In a statement dated August 3, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) cautioned applicants who would be taking the Basic Education Certificate Examination in 2023 not to engage in malpractice or any other act or misbehavior that would interfere with their goals and objectives.
