AFCON 2023: Ghanaians weren’t fair to Andre Ayew – Henry Asante Twum

The Black Stars crushed out of the ongoing African Cup of Nations tournament finishing third with just two points, The Black Stars’ early exit from the tournament sparked criticism and led to the dismissal of Coach Chris Hughton, and there is currently a search underway for a new coach.

The captain for the Black Stars Andre Ayew has been on the receiving end of some attacks for the team’s poor performance and speculations that he only wanted to break the record of the Cameroonian coach as one of the most capped AFCON players.

However, the Communications Director for the Ghana Football Association, Henry Asante Twum has defended André, saying that Ghanaians were not fair to the player

“André did not force anyone to bring him on,” he said.

Speaking to Gideon Okyere Anim on Original FM’s Super Morning Show on Thursday, Asante Twum said André Ayew was given instructions by the coach on the role he had to play before being sent onto the pitch to play.

”He was shown what to do during set pieces and Conner kicks,’’ he added.

Andre Ayew has played in eight AFCON tournaments, made several appearances, and has scored ten goals. He is currently the captain of the Black Stars.

Ayew took full responsibility for the team’s failure in a heartfelt video message, expressing regret and assuring fans that the team will bounce back stronger.
