Assin North by-election: NPP confronts Police over alleged detention of party polling agents

Some executives of the governing New Patriotic Party are alleging that 3 of their polling station agents and a supervisor have been arrested by the Ghana Police Service.

The party’s General Secretary, Justice Frimpong Koduah claims the arrest is aimed at their representatives in their strongholds.

The highly-powered delegation of the NPP, including the Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo Markin are demanding the release of their agents immediately.

In a video available to Metro TV, Justice Frimpong Koduah is captured verbally exchanging words with the police officers demanding the release of the party polling station agents and the supervisor.

Meanwhile, the Police Service have picked up an individual posing as a police office at Assin Bereku.

The men who handed him over to the police claimed he is a member of the New Patriotic Party

The police did not immediately respond to our call for comment.

Three candidates are vying for the seat: James Gyakye Quayson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG).

The Electoral Commission (EC) scheduled the by-election for June 27 following the nullification of the 2020 parliamentary election won by Mr Quayson.

The Supreme Court ordered Parliament to expunge Mr Quayson’s name from its records after it found that he held dual citizenship at the time of filing his nomination forms.
