Bureau of Public Safety urges independent probe into fatal Bortianor shooting incident by police

The Bureau of Public Safety (BPS) is demanding an urgent and independent investigation into a deadly shooting incident involving suspected landguards and officers of the anti-robbery unit of the Ghana Police Service.

The incident is reported to have taken place in Bortianor, located in the Greater Accra Region, last Thursday.

According to the police, a shootout occurred, resulting in injuries to five of the suspects who were later pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. The remaining suspects managed to flee the scene and are currently at large.

Expressing concern over similar incidents in the recent past, the Bureau voiced apprehension that innocent individuals may be caught up in such encounters. It issued a statement over the weekend, warning that if this trend continues, it could potentially endanger the lives of innocent citizens.

Nana Yaw Akwada, Executive Director of the Bureau, expressed shock at the actions of the police, highlighting the possibility of an unjustified use of force. The Bureau emphasized the need for a thorough investigation to restore public trust and confidence in the justice system, as well as to prevent the recurrence of such distressing events.

In response, the police have urged the public, especially residents of Bortianor, to remain vigilant and promptly report any individuals seeking medical treatment for gunshot wounds. The cooperation of the public is vital in assisting the police in taking immediate action.

The call by the Bureau of Public Safety for an independent investigation reflects the growing concern over the use of force by law enforcement authorities. The outcome of the investigation will be crucial in determining the truth behind the incident and implementing necessary measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
