C/R: Mining Around Ayensu River: Effutu NDC PC kicks against move

The National Democratic Congress’ parliamentary candidate for the Effutu constituency, Dr. James Kofi Annan, has petitioned the Minerals Commission to abrogate a lease granted for the mining of lithium at an area that is in close proximity to the Ayensu River.

Mr. Annan complained about the potential effect of mining activities on the river and surrounding communities.

The National Democratic Congress’ parliamentary candidate for Effutu, Dr. James Kofi Annan says the decision to mine lithium and gold in Domeabra, Atekyedo, and Okyereko communities which lie along the banks of the Ayensu River has the potential of destroying the water source for the people of Effutu and the Gomoa enclave.

He complains that the Ghana Water Company Limited’s pumping plant located near Atekyedo and the treatment plant at Winneba water works source raw water from the Ayensu River hence mining near the banks of the Ayensu River has the potential of destroying the water body and in effect affect the operations of the water distribution company which is already struggling with similar challenges in other parts of the country, particularly in the Central Region.

The NDC candidate fears the lease, if granted, will cause more harm than good.

James Kofi Annan enumerated some of the potential issues that may befall the three communities if the mining activities are allowed.

James Kofi Annan has, therefore, petitioned the Minerals Commission through the Effutu Municipal Assembly over the concerns.

He said the lease agreement should be turned down to save the people of Effutu and Gomoa from the effects of mining.
