Death of Kumawu MP should be an awakening call to everyone – Kwesi Pratt

Ace journalist, Kwesi Pratt Jnr., has commiserated with the family of the late Member of Parliament for Kumawu, Philip Basoah, and has also stated that the death of the legislator should provoke the thoughts of people.

“The story of his death is interesting and has many important lessons. For those on the front line of our politics, there’s a lot to learn from the story of his death,” he said on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV on Wednesday, March 29, 2023.

Mr. Pratt asked politicians to make their health a priority as the business in the house will still be achieved even in their absence.

“Even when he had collapsed there was an attempt by his colleagues to wake him up, to revive him. His colleagues were examining the possibility of waking him up to cast his ballot so that their government business could go through.”

The Editor-in-Chief of the Insightful Newspaper, however, cautioned young politicians not to compromise on their health but instead know the risk they stand if they do so.

“This is the lesson, young able-bodied members of parliament did not give a fair about their votes, a collapsing member of parliament and his colleagues were anxious about his one vote and what that one vote could do for the party programme. It is a huge statement,” he stated.

Background

The late Member of Parliament for Kumawu, Philip Basoah was reported dead in the early hours of Tuesday, 28th March 2023, following a short illness.

Before his death, the NPP MP was recorded to be absent on the day Parliament was supposed to cast a ballot in the house.

After several calls placed to get him had proved futile and upon receiving news of his collapse at his residence, some Members of Parliament visited his residence where they found him unconscious.

He was rushed to the LEKMA Hospital where after several assessments he was later taken to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

He died the following morning after he was reported to have been taken to the Intensive Care Unit.

He died at the age of 53.
