Empowering women: Dozens of market women in Tamale train on financial management

The Chief Executive Officer of Girls To Women Foundation, Hajia Mariam Bugala, has urged Ghanaians not to discriminate when celebrating or appreciating women in the country.

According to her, women from the formal sector are always celebrated to detriment of women in the local or informal sector of the country.

Over 80 women from major markets in Tamale have been trained on Financial Literacy and Business Management by Girls to Women Foundation, a nongovernmental organization working to advance gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.

The training was under their project titled “Financial Freedom For The Informal Sector Women”.

Identifying some of the challenges faced by the local women in our markets, the Girls To Women Foundation with funding support from Africa Women Development Fund, saw the need to equip them with knowledge of business and financial management skills to ensure prudent management of their finances.

At the end of the training, each of the women were honoured with a piece of GTP clothe for their contribution to the Ghanaian economy and to mark this year’s international women’s day.

Speaking to the media, CEO of the Foundation, Hajia Mariam Bugala said women from the informal sector should always be celebrated just like those from the formal sector.

On his part, Mutawakil Mohammed Clinton, a financial expert, said it was important to start educating women from the informal sector to enable them manage their own finances well.

Speaking to Metro News, the local women could not hide their excitement for receiving such an important training, saying they have never experienced such support before.

They added that the knowledge impacted through this training, will go a long way to supporting their businesses.
