Ghana Health Services celebrate reduction in infant mortality

The Ghana Health Services (GHS) says Ghana has been able to beat the World Health Organization’s target of births delivered by skilled officers.

According to the Director General of Ghana Health Services (GHS), Dr. Patrick Kumah Aboagye, the sector can now boast of 90% success in live births delivered by skilled midwives in Ghana.

He made the revelation at the 4th Annual General Conference of the National Association of Registered Midwives

Looking into the future, he explained that the outfit is working to ensure that it meets the Sustainable Development Goal 3, by ensuring that maternal and infant mortality rates are reduced drastically.

Commenting on what has led to the success being celebrated, Dr. Patrick Kumah Aboagye said it was due to massive investment made in the improvement of several skilled midwives across the country as well as improving various health facilities.

Dr Patrick Kumah Aboagye is optimistic about the country’s trajectory in investing in the health sector, insisting that, with more investment, Ghana can boast of a world-class healthcare delivery in the sub-region.

In her part, the National President of the National Association of Registered Midwives (NARM) Mary Ofosu while lauding the government for its efforts, highlighted that there must be more investment into the health sector in other to improve facilities and provide needed logistics to make the work of midwives more efficient.

Meanwhile, the National Association of Registered Midwives in partnership with the Swedish Medical Center (SMC), has launched a fund to cater for its members with cancer infections. This intervention has come to relieve the financial burden placed on members with cancer.

Every active member of the association has an automatic qualification to accessing the fund and by that, all financial costs covering treatment will be borne by the association.
