The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced it will soon adjust transport fares upward in response to the implementation of the Emissions Levy Act, 2023 (Act 1112).

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) began the implementation of the Emissions Levy Act, 2023 (Act 1112), which imposes a levy on carbon dioxide equivalent emissions on internal combustion engine vehicles on February 1.

Speaking in an interview with Accra-based Original 91.9FM, the Public Relations Officer for the Ghana Private Road Transport Union, Imoro Abass stated that there is going to be an increment in the transportation fares as a result of the double payment of tax on transportation which is the eco-tax and the sanitation and pollution tax.

He indicated that all attempts to get the government to withdraw the implementation of the emission levy proved futile.

Imoro Abass further said a petition was sent to Parliament but it did not receive the needed attention they anticipated.

According to him, in their last meeting with Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta and Transport Minister Kwesi Amoako-Attah concerns were raised to take down the eco-tax which they assured them of working on it but to no avail.
