La General hospital was a death trap – Dr Okoe-Boye

Dr. Bernard Okoe-Boye, the Minister-designate for  Ministry of Health, has provided justification for demolishing the La General Hospital.

The La General Hospital is presently being fix after being initially destroyed in 2020 as result of documented structural flaws.

Significant public criticism has been directed towards the government’s decision to demolish the building, particularly from the Minority in Parliament.

The Minister of Finance declared in the 2024 budget that contractors have started work on the project.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo highlighted a major change for the hospital project, highlighting the government’s steadfast dedication to improving healthcare services and infrastructure across the country.

Dr. Okoe-Boye contended that the hospital should be demolished because it is a “death trap” during his vetting by the Parliament’s Appointments Committee.

He described incidents of concrete slabs falling off the building, highlighting the dangerous circumstances, based on his own experience from his time working at the La General Hospital.

“For La General Hospital, because I worked there, I have a personal experience of some of the discussions that led to demolition. When I was working in La, there were occasions while on the ward, a concrete slab would fall off the building and hit the ground. That structure was a death trap.”
