NDC feels vindicated by Supreme Court’s ruling on the anti-gay bill — Dafeamekpor

Member of Parliament for South Dayi Constituency and a lead sponsor of the Anti-LGBTQI Bill says his side feels vindicated by the Supreme Court’s decision to dismiss an application seeking to halt Parliament’s deliberations on the Anti-LGBTQI Bill.

Mr. Rockson-Nelson Etse Kwami Dafeamekpor told Metro TV’s Parliamentary Correspondent Abdallah Mohammed in an interview on Wednesday, July 19, 2023.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed the application seeking to halt Parliament’s deliberations on the Anti-LGBTQI bill.

A nine-member panel led by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkonoo,  ruled that it is not persuaded to grant such an order at this time because the issues mentioned will be addressed in the substantive litigation.

This is the court’s ruling in a lawsuit brought by researcher Dr. Amanda Odoi who claims that the constitution was violated during the legislative process for the proposed bill.

Dr. Odoi is one of two persons who have filed a lawsuit against the Speaker of Parliament and the Attorney General in relation to the Anti-LGBT Law.

In her writ, she argued that the Speaker had disrespected the legal system and its procedures.

According to the court documents, Alban Bagbin had repeatedly disregarded the Republic of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution as well as the legal procedure.

The legal action sparked more discussion and controversy around the anti-LGBTQ+ measure, which has been the subject of disagreement among parties.
