One killed, 16 injured in accident on Kasoa-Winneba road

Driver of a sprinter mini bus has died while 16 passengers have sustained injuries following a crash at Gomoa Potsin on the Kasoa-Winneba stretch of the N1 Highway on Monday evening.

The driver of the Takoradi-Accra bound sprinter mini bus with registration number GW 5308-23 successfully overtook a leading vehicle but had one of his tires removed before he could switch back to his lane.

The vehicle skidded and ran into a Kia Rhino truck with registration number GX 7429-22 throwing both vehicles to either sides of the road.

Three passengers who were injured in the bucket of the truck got extensively injured while occupants of the sprinter bus suffered moderate and critical injuries respectively.

In all, 16 passengers suffered injuries with five of them taken to the Gomoa Potsin Polyclinic and the remainder to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital for treatment.

Driver of the sprinter bus who was transferred from the Potsin Polyclinic died shortly at the emergency unit of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra.

Speaking to Metro News, unscathed driver of the Rhino Truck said he had spotted the overtaking sprinter bus and pulled out to the shoulder of the road but the driver appeared to have lost control after losing one of his tires and crashed into his truck.

It’s the second occurrence of an accident on the stretch in less than one week. A crash at the Dominase onion market not too far from this spot also saw some passengers suffering injuries.

Some local members of the area have formed a volunteer emergency response team and have been helping in the evacuation of accident victims.

On Monday night, the team were busy transporting patients to respective health facilities. But they are challenged with inadequate resources.

Ebo Anderson, the leader of the team and wants measures put in place to reduce the number of accidents on the stretch.
