Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu set to lead Bawumia’s policy and manifesto team

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has designated Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, the majority leader and minister of parliamentary affairs, to lead the party’s policy and manifesto committee for the 2024 election.

Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu has led the NPP’s parliament for a total of twenty-three years and two months. He held the positions of chief whip for four years, deputy leader for four years, and majority leader for fifteen years and two months during this time.

In order to lead “Team Bawumia” and craft the NPP’s platform around the ideas of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s presidential candidate, Mensah-Bonsu is expected to resign from his Majority Leader role. This platform will then be presented to the Ghanaian public in advance of the general elections scheduled for December 7, 2024.

After Mr. Mensah-Bonsu leaves the position, Alexander Afenyo Markin, the Deputy Majority Leader and a member of parliament for the Centrsl Region’s Efutu seat, is expected to take over as Majority Leader. Afenyo Markin, who is from the Central Region of the country and is in his early 40s, was selected as the Majority Leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), however many within the party view this as a calculated move.

Political analysts also note that the Central Region is a swing state, particularly when it comes to parliamentary seats, which makes Afenyo Markin’s elevation one of the most calculated moves the NPP would make in the run-up to the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections. This is because the NDC’s John Mahama is expected to announce professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, a native of the Central Region, as his running mate.
