Persons Living with HIV demand end to medicine stock-outs and accountability for misuse

The Ghana Network of Persons Living with HIV (NAP+ Gh) has made a passionate plea to the government regarding the persistent issue of medicine stock-outs in the country’s healthcare system.

Highlighting the dire consequences of individuals being unable to access essential antiretroviral therapy (ART), the organization underscores how these shortages undermine public health and hinder progress towards national HIV/AIDS targets.

They urged the government and relevant stakeholders to prioritize the development and implementation of robust, enduring policies to ensure consistent access to life-saving medications.

“We wish to draw attention to the persistent issue of medicine stock-outs that continue to plague our healthcare system. The inability of individuals to access essential antiretroviral therapy (ART) due to stock-outs not only undermines our health but also poses a significant barrier to achieving our national HIV/AIDS targets”

In a bid to address the root causes of medicine shortages, NAP+ Gh advocates for the meaningful involvement of stakeholders like NAP+ Ghana in planning and strengthening supply chain management systems.

They emphasized the importance of enhancing forecasting and procurement processes, as well as increasing investments in local manufacturing capacity. This strategic approach, they believe, will ensure every person living with HIV in Ghana has uninterrupted access to essential medications.

“We urge the government and relevant stakeholders to prioritize the development and implementation of robust long-lasting policies and mechanisms to ensure consistent and uninterrupted access to life-saving HIV/AIDS medications”

Additionally, NAP+ Gh calls for the engagement of its members at every stage of national deliberations on HIV care, underscoring the importance of leveraging their expertise for positive impact.

Moreover, NAP+ Gh raised an alarm over reports of individuals exploiting the free provision of HIV medications for personal gain, soliciting funds from others in need. The organization firmly condemned the act and asserted its zero-tolerance policy and vows to take action to prevent further occurrences.

The national and regional leadership of NAP+ Gh, along with individuals receiving care, underscored the critical need for immediate attention to these pressing issues affecting Persons Living with HIV in Ghana.

“Together, we can ensure that every person living with HIV in Ghana has access to essential medications and in the right quantities,” the statement assured.
