Public education needed to stop rampant killings of women — NCCE

The past few months have seen a growing trend of abuse of women, violence in all ramifications  and often times end in the gruesome killing of these women.

Conversations have been sparked and conclusions have been drawn with some suggesting that these killings have been made possible due to infidelity on the part of ladies.

But this is in no way a justification for tolerating such cases as many pressure groups, individuals and organizations have tasked relevant bodies to be up and doing to ensure a total decline if not outright eradication of these rampant killing.

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has waded into the recent indiscriminate killing of women.

In a press statement released, the commission condemned the unfortunate chain of incidence and  stressed the need  and tolerance for human right.

” The right to life is a fundamental human right for all human beings and no one has the right to take the life of another.”

The National Commission for Civic Education asked that perpetrators of this heinous crimes ought to be mindful of the constitution as it clearly states repercussions for defaulters of the law.

“Perpetrators of these recent abuses against women and young girls especially must be mindful of this Constitutional Provision and the fact that no one should intentionally deprive a person of his life.”

“A person’s right to life must be respected and considered a civic obligation.”

The Commission also seized the opportunity to encourage families to own their responsibilities as a chunk of reported abuse cases are as a result of the sharp decline of family values and the lack of respect for cultural values.

“The NCCE attributes the incidences of abuse against women to the decline and breakdown in family values, and national and cultural values in our social life.”

Meanwhile, the NCCE has tasked the Police Service and all bodies that matter to increase their surveillance and ensure that these perpetrators face the recourse of the law.

The National Commission for Civic Education urged parents, guardians, educators, caregivers to extend the needed support in training these youngsters to inhabit respect for one another as the Commission also intensifies public education on the fundamental human rights and its sustainance.
