The Tema Youth Association has issued a fervent call for immediate and decisive action on what the group termed unprovoked brutality and highhandedness by some officers of the Eastern Naval Command of the Ghana Navy.
The association, in a statement, has demanded an exhaustive and impartial national investigation to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the incident that led to the death of two of civilians. They emphasize the paramount importance of uncovering the truth and holding those responsible fully accountable for their actions.

On Friday, April 12, 2024, during a street procession organized by the youth as part of the annual Kplejoo festival, tensions escalated upon reaching the street in front of the Eastern Naval Command, leading to a confrontation between the youth and the naval ratings on duty. Amidst the melee, the Naval officers opened fire killing two and injuring scores of revelers.
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) issued statement condemning the incident and said it is collaborating with the Ghana Police Service (GPS) to investigate the incident and cautioning it will not hesitate to come down heavy on anyone who tries to stage a reprisal attack on its installations, including the Eastern Naval Command.
However, in a unified front for justice and accountability, the Tema Youth Association called upon government officials, law enforcement agencies, and civil society organizations to join hands in their pursuit of justice for the victims of “this unfathomable violence”.
The association stressed that no individual should be immune to the consequences of their actions, particularly those entrusted with the duty to safeguard the public.
They underscored the urgency for the relevant authorities to impose appropriate sanctions, ensuring justice prevails and future recurrence is prevented.
“As a community, we stand united in our quest for justice and accountability. We call upon all stakeholders, including government officials, law enforcement agencies, and civil society organizations, to join us in our efforts to seek justice for the victims of this senseless violence”
