Tema Naval Base Attack: Two civilians dead, property destroyed

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) says it is collaborating with the Ghana Police Service (GPS) to investigate a mob attack on Tema Naval Base and the Naval Barracks at Tema New Town, Biekro Barracks.

The two attacks which took place Friday, April 12, 2024, and Saturday, April 13, 2024, led to the destruction of vehicle belonging to the Eastern Naval Command of the Ghana Navy by a crowd participating in a festival at Tema Newtown.

A statement from GAF explained that three Naval personnel onboard the vehicle sustained severe injuries and were rushed to the Tema Naval Base Medical Centre for immediate treatment.

Amidst the chaos, the statement said three suspects were apprehended by the naval personnel and handed over to the Tema Newtown District Police for further investigations.

The arrest escalated when a mob, suspected to be festival participants, launched an attack on the Tema Naval Base.

Armed with stones and other implements, their objective, according to GAF, was to free their arrested colleagues. The security of the Base was threatened, prompting the firing of warning shots to repel the attack and protect the sensitive installations within the Base.

However, the GAF statement noted that the Police later reported that two civilians were brought dead to the Tema General Hospital but cause of death remains unknown and is under investigation.

GAF said fhe findings will be made available in due course while expressing its condolences to the bereaved families and urged all parties to maintain calm while the incident is being investigated.

“We wish, however, to caution the youth of Tema that any further attacks on our installations or personnel would be met with the appropriate response,” the statement from GAF warned.
