We’ve not increased transport fares; don’t pay new charges – Transport Operators

Road transport operators have denounced increment in transport fares by certain drivers, labeling it as unlawful and unacceptable.

In a joint statement issued on Thursday, April 11, 2024, by both the Ghana Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), they emphasized the importance of adhering to existing fare regulations outlined in the administrative Instrument governing public transport fares.

The operators underscored that no official decision had been made to increase fares, urging all stakeholders, including regional administrations, municipal assemblies, and station welfare committees, to enforce compliance.

“It has come to our attention that some sections of Drivers have arbitrarily increased transport fares in contravention of the Administrative Instrument on the review of public transport fares in the country. This action is illegal and must be stopped immediately if this is true”

“Therefore any increase outside the Administrative Instrument, should be disregarded and treated with contempt. We therefore urge commuters not to pay any fare outside the existing fares. We are by this statement, urging the Regional”

Expressing their commitment to ensuring fair and just transportation practices, the operators called upon drivers to uphold the directive and demonstrate confidence in their leadership.

They emphasized their ongoing advocacy for the welfare of all transport operators, pledging to continue pushing for policies that safeguard their interests.

“As leadership, we have followed with keen interest, the recent adjustment in the fuel prices and other related operational cost. We are currently engaging stakeholders to give consideration to the various cost component and agree on the way forward”

“As has been the practice, the leadership met with the Ministry of Transport on Wednesday 10th April, 2024 to present our demands. Once consensus is reached, the general public will be duly informed,” the statement assured.
