Why is the National Cathedral not on the ‘Performance Tracker’? Annie Ampofo quizzes

Ghanaian journalist Annie Afua Ampofo has questioned why the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) excluded the stalled National Cathedral project on the much-touted Performance Tracker.

The government of Ghana launched the Performance Tracker at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) in Accra on Wednesday, April 11.

The platform is aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability in the execution of infrastructure projects across the country.

Described as factual, reliable, and precise, the tracker is anticipated to function as a dependable tool for demonstrating the advancement and influence of infrastructure projects, thereby fostering trust and assurance among the populace.

The Minister for Works and Housing Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said at the launch that the government has listed some thirteen thousand projects tagged with their geolocations on the website.

“Job created between 2017 and June 2023, when this data was put together is a little over two million. So two million and eighty-seven thousand and it will tell you the source of the data coming from SSNIT. So SSNIT is the one providing this data. For every data set that is uploaded, the source will be made available,” Oppong Nkrumah said.

Since its launch, the government has come under harsh criticism with many mocking the Akufo-Addo government for celebrating mediocrity and some accusations of ‘stolen’ projects.

Annie, in a Facebook post on Monday, April 15, wondered why the National Cathedral was seemly missing on the Performance Tracker website.

She stressed that it should have been listed as an achievement even “if 2% complete”

The National Cathedral is a historic project that provides a sacred space and infrastructure for the formal religious activities of the nation, like state funerals and presidential inaugural services.

It is this national character that distinguishes it from the other Cathedrals in the country.

Despite President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s promise to complete and commission it by March 6, 2024, the project is still in its foundation stage.
