200 prisoners freed as Crime Check Foundation pays fines

Some 200 inmates who were been held at the Awutu prisons for various petty offenses have been freed.

This follows the intervention of the Crime Check Foundation to settle various fines and penalties that were placed on the head of these prisoners by the court.

These prisoners were being kept at the Awutu Prisons Camp for various petty offenses attracting fines and penalties. Their inability to settle those fines led to their incarceration for several months and years.

But it was all joy for them as the Crime Check Foundation made interventions to settle their debt to have them freed to make the retirement of the Awutu Prisons commander DDP William Thomas Anaman.

Speaking to Metro News, Susana Adosu, Project Coordinator for the foundation said the intervention which was done under the foundations Petty Offenses Project is aimed at reducing congestion at the various prisons whilst also seeking freedom for first-time petty offenders who are not able to afford the bounty placed on them.

On his part, the Awutu Prisons commander DDP Anaman called on stakeholders to aid in the facilitation of the smooth reintegration of these prisoners back into society.

After 34 years of distinguished service to the Ghana Prisons Service DDP Williams Thomas Anaman has gracefully retired. His last eight years at the Awutu Prisons Camp as commander has been described as impactful. Apart from the original block that was built to house inmates, his efforts have led to the building of an administration block, a warehouse, and an infirmary among others.

At a colorful service to mark his retirement, DDP Thomas William Anaman shared with Metro News some of the experiences he had as a prison officer and a piece of advice to the general public.
