2023 BECE: 55 special needs candidates sit for exams in Central Region

55 special needs candidates are taking part in this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the Central Region.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) says it has made special arrangements and assistance to facilitate the smooth writing of the papers for these candidates.

The overall number of registered candidates for this year’s BECE in the Central Region is 68,049, comprising 52,949 candidates from public schools and 15,100 from private basic schools.

2,381 schools registered candidates for the examination with 1,393 and 988 representing public and private schools respectively.

The overall number of candidates sitting for the examination includes some 55 students with special needs in the areas of low vision, deaf, autism, cerebral palsy, and learning difficulty.

The Central Regional Directorate of the Ghana Education Service has made special arrangements for such candidates by providing large prints for those with low vision and sign language interpreters for the deaf. Extra time will also be given to those with autism and cerebral palsy.

The Directorate has also planned for candidates who may be writing the exams pregnant to facilitate their writing.

The arrangement includes extra time for candidates who may exhibit weakness and other conditions associated with pregnancy.
