7 Dead, 5 Rescued Alive As About 30 Galamseyers Get Trapped Underground In Birim North

An illegal mining pit has caved in at Korley Teye in the Birim North District of the Eastern Region.

Following the disaster, it is estimated that about 30 suspected miners were trapped underground. Through the initial effort of the locals, 5 of the miners have been rescued whiles 7 were found dead.

According to an eyewitness who identified himself as Frank Owusu Amoah to reporters narrated that he and others rushed to the scene upon hearing the news of the disaster to help the victims.

The 5 rescued, he said, have been sent to the hospital with injuries but many more remained trapped as darkness set in.

The unfortunate incident is believed to have happened on Monday, May 15, 2023, at about 10 am.

Frank Owusu Amoah further disclosed that as of 5:30 pm, no official rescue effort had been established at the scene, with only the miners and other locals doing what they could in rescue efforts.

He alleged that calls to the Police, Fire Service and National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) yielded no immediate results.

The eyewitness further confirmed that the illegal miners were ready to harm anyone attempting to take photographs at the scene because they did not want any attention drawn to the disaster.
