Alan Kyerematen reiterates review of free SHS policy to safeguard quality

Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, a former Minister of Trade and Industry, has stated that if he wins the presidency in the 2024 elections, he will reconsider the free senior high school (SHS) program.

In an interview with UTV on Tuesday, Mr. Kyerematen stated that after seven years of implementation, the Free SHS policy should be reviewed, even if he applauded the NPP government’s efforts to make education more accessible.

Mr. Kyerematen continued by outlining his goals for the education sector and stressing the importance of a thorough evaluation of the Free SHS program.

“I will review Free SHS, we have done it for seven years, You cannot implement a programme for seven and not review it, so when I come there will be a comprehensive review of the free SHS. The original idea is good and I commend Akufo-Addo for it, but it has to be reviewed,” Mr Kyerematen said.

The quality of the education that children receive will also be maintained and improved, he stated, adding that his government will make sure that the program assures access to school.

Mr. Kyerematen went on to describe his strategies in further detail, emphasizing the necessity of greater investments in infrastructure, teacher preparation, and curriculum creation.
