Bullying in schools: Gov’t working to eradicate it completely – Dep. Education Minister

Deputy Minister of Education, John Ntim Fordjour has assured Ghanaians that measures are being put in place to eradicate the roots of bullying in senior high schools.

During his appearance on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, the Deputy Education Minister stated that “it is saddening to wake up to this viral news and viral video of an assault.”

He described the incident as “a very barbaric assault involving two students of the Adisadel college.”

“It was a matter we thought had rooted out of every four walls of every school in this country having to resurface in such a manner. These are not things that should be condoned, glorified in anyways,” He admonished.

John Ntim Fordjour noted that per his checks the incident happened on June 30, 2023, but both parties attempted to conceal it. However. it came to the attention of the school’s authorities.

“The matter is being taken very seriously from the time it came to our attention, [and] a lot of actions has been taken. From the regional director of Education, Ghana Education Service, the Director General himself, and for us at the Ministry of Education,” he assured.

Ntim Fordjour disclosed that the management of Adisadel College has engaged the Ghana Police Service to investigate the scandal.

“They [Adisadel College] have also involved the Ghana Police Service. The IGP is assisting eminently and [he’s] sent his officers who have since invited or placed some of the suspects under arrest, taken their statements, released them through the juvenile method or procedures.”

Mr. Ntim Fordjour also hinted that he has summoned the headmaster together with the Regional Director of Education for a discussion as this matter is not one to be left at just the exchange of reports but must receive the highest of attention because it is going to occasion many reforms and a serious paradigm shift when it comes to bullying in schools.

In a viral video, a student of the Adisadel College in Cape student can be seen locking the arms of the victim and forcefully hitting his face against a metal bed, resulting in profuse bleeding below the victim’s right eye in a dormitory.

The cause of the brawl is immediately unknown.

Meanwhile, the management of the school in a statement said the two students who are both in their final year have been sanctioned.
