Encourage women to develop vocational skills – RMU Ag. Vice Chancellor

Acting Vice Chancellor of the Regional Maritime University (RMU), Dr. Jethro Books, has called on stakeholders to support and empower more females to develop their vocational skills for the industry.

The was speaking at the outdooring ceremony of 7 female beneficiaries who successfully completed a three-month course in welding and fabrication.

MODEC, a global supplier and operator of offshore floating vessels sponsored seven female senior high school graduates to study a three-month course in welding and fabrication.

In collaboration with the Regional Maritime University and Corporate Professional Industrial, the training was intended to encourage more females to enroll in vocational courses.

Out of 400 participants, only 7 managed to pass the test to be the final beneficiaries. The beneficiaries are Angela Sackey, Theresa Osei Dampo, Priscilla Dadjo, Hegar Frimpong, Stella Akofa,  Favor Gbadjo, and Nelly Akurugu.

Speaking to the media, Acting Vice Chancellor of the Regional Maritime University Dr. Jethro Books said the training is a step toward equipping citizens in modern welding and fabrication to match international standards.

“We are not just running a strict academic activity but also linking up with the industry because that gap between what the industry wants and what the academia is producing is what we are trying to fill,” Dr. Jethro Books, the Acting Vice Chancellor of the Regional Maritime University.

He is however calling on stakeholders to support and empower more females to develop their vocational skills for the industry.

“I, therefore, want to use the occasion to call on other organizations to follow the full step of MODEC to collaborate with RMU in empowering more women in vocational skill training and other skill training available at RMU,” Dr. Jethro Books said.

On his part, the Chief Executive Officer of MODEC, Theophilus Ahwireng expressed his excitement for the young women and emphasized on the opportunities in the industry.

“Several years ago, it was with doubt that a portion of such a very sophisticated machinery including machinery cannot be fabricated here. But I’m telling you that the last two FPSOs that were launched in various components were fabricated in this country by Ghanaian technicians,” Mr. Ahwireng added.

The welder training center was set up to train, equip, and develop the capacity of local welders for the oil and gas industry.
