Exodus of medical practitioners affecting health delivery in Central Region

Several health officers have abandoned their posts causing a setback in healthcare delivery in the central Region.

The doctor to patient ratio keeps rising, causing stakeholders to express concern and calling for additional health officers.

The situation is placing a strain on remaining health officers at several facilities in the region.

According to the Regional Health Directorate, several officers have abandoned their posts and either travelled abroad to seek greener pastures or engaged in other ventures they consider more profitable.

It’s become even more worrying as the trend is high among senior health officers such as physician assistants, and medical doctors.

At an annual review of health services, superintendents of various health facilities in the Awutu Senya East Municipality raised concerns about the development.

For instance, the Mother and Child Hospital which is the biggest referral point in the municipality had four senior health workers resigning from their posts.

Speaking to Metro News, the Awutu Senya East Municipal Director of Health Services, Dr Stanley Kwaku Aidoo requested for the replacement of health workers who have left the municipality as remaining workers are currently overburdened.

On behalf of the government, the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson said the situation of health workers leaving the country is known to government and discussions are being held by cabinet on measures to reduce the exodus.

She also pledged to have a number of health facilities that are under construction within the municipality to be completed in order to make healthcare easily accessible.
