Getting Assin North by-election prediction wrong will not deter me from polling – Ben Ephson

Ghanaian pollster, Ben Ephson, says although he got the Assin North by-election prediction wrong, that will not stop him from carrying out polls.

Mr. Ephson noted that he will access his polls and perfect his art and continue to release polls ahead of elections.

While admitting he got it wrong, the Managing Editor of the Daily Dispatch Newspaper noted that to err as a pollster is not unheard of because pollsters are not perfect.

“We will still do it and try and perfect the art of polling by-elections and of polling party executive positions. When, at times, I get it wrong and people say why, I get a bit humbled. I’m not perfect,” he said on Metro TV on Tuesday, June 27, 2023.

Celebrated for being phenomenal, Mr. Ephson said he and his team will do a postmortem to understand and find out why their projection was the opposite of the by-election outcome.

“It is an art of trying to get into people’s minds and what they will do, so. Maybe, the over 22 years and 83% perfection you [Ghanaians] have high expectations of me and I think that they shouldn’t worry we will look at where we went wrong and move on,” he assured.

Prior to the Assin North by-election, Mr. Ephson had projected that Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party would triumph over James Gyakye Quayson of the National Democratic Congress.

However, at the end of Tuesday’s polls, Mr. Quayson polled 17,245 votes representing 57.56 percent of the total valid votes cast to beat Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG).

Charles Opoku polled 12,630 votes representing 42.15 percent of the total votes cast while the LPG’s Bernice Enyonam Sefenu polled 87 votes representing 0.29%.

Mr. Quayson was officially declared the winner of the elections by the Electoral Commission.
