MoMo fraud is on the Increase – Chamber of Telcos

The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunication is concerned about the increasing cases of mobile money fraud across the country.

The chamber says MoMo fraudsters continue to employ new ways of defrauding users despite several layers of security put in place by MoMo service providers thus urging customers to be wary of their tricks in order not to fall victim.

In Elmina in the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem District of the Central Region, the activities of fraudsters are pervasive.

Several users have become victims of MoMo fraud and lost various amounts of money.

Some victims who spoke to Metro News say they struggle to fathom why those fraudsters are able to provide certain key information concerning their MoMo wallet which makes them susceptible to their antics and are beginning to suspect that agents and employees of telecommunication companies may be involved in the fraud scheme and want that deeply investigated.

Within a short space in recent times, a total of 15 cases were reported to the police.

Some of these cases have been dealt with and seen culprits punished by law.

The Ghana Chamber of Telecommunication Networks, the umbrella body under which all the telecommunication networks fall is worried about the high incidents of MoMo fraud.

The chamber is worried about the numerous customers who have fallen victim to mobile money fraud through the use of different antics by these fraudsters.

But the Chamber of Telecommunications says advanced measures have been put in place to deal with the menace.

According to Ing Dr. Ken Ashigbe, Chief Executive of the Ghana Chamber of Telcos, the mobile money fraudsters have advanced their game by resorting to the use of Ghana Cards of innocent victims to register new sim cards which they use in perpetuating fraud.

He indicated that there is a concerted plan between the Ghana Police Service, some banks, and the Cyber Security Unit to block persons who engage in momo fraud and subsequently prosecute them when arrested.

Apart from MoMo fraud, damage to telecommunication infrastructure through theft is also rife in the area.

Parts of standby generators at telecommunication signal transmission sites and fiber cables are constantly stolen causing disruptions in telecommunication signals reception while plunging telcos into huge costs on repairs.

Quiet recently, the court handed an eight-year prison term to Kojo Nkrumah, a man notoriously known for fiber cuts in the area.

Dr. Ing. Kenneth Ashigbey says a new legislative instrument is being put in place to deal with criminals.
