NDC, NPP communicators clash over Akufo-Addo’s SONA

A Communication team member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Beatrice Annan, says President Akufo-Addo is uninterested in the developmental needs of the country and does not understand the mood of the country but communication team member of the New Patriotic Party, Lawuratu Musah-Saaka says the president cannot be in despair like everyone else.

Speaking on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV, the Lawyer and NDC’s communicator, Beatrice Annan, believes the penultimate address by the President, Nana Akufo-Addo is one far from reality, especially for failing to address key issues such as corruption and employment cases.

“The president is coming to address a nation that inflation is at an all-time high, a nation that is unable to service its external debt, the president is coming to address his colleagues in the age bracket of 80 years plus whose investment has gone down the drain because of the haircut and the president was just laughing, teasing, dabbling in irrelevant things. I think that truly and really, the President doesn’t understand the mood of the Country, he doesn’t appreciate the excruciating levels of hardship,” Beatrice Annan Posited.

But NPP’s communicator, who doubles as the Deputy Executive Secretary of the Postal Courier Services Regulatory Commission, Lawuratu Musah-Saaka says the president represents the father figure of the country and is tasked to provide solutions and therefore cannot be seen lamenting about the downturns of the country.

“His Excellency the President is the father of the Nation, you can’t have the father of the Nation come and stand in front of the people that he owes absolute responsibility to and be lamenting like every other citizen. He needs to reassure us and give us hope and that is what I think the Excellency the President did,” she said.

President Akufo-Addo has come under intense criticism from the Minority in Parliament, some sections of Ghanaians, and anti-corruption campaigners for not mentioning corruption-related issues during his address — an indication that he has failed in his fight against corruption, contrary to what he promised in 2016.

The Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2023 released by Transparency International (TI) scored Ghana zero for the fourth consecutive year in fighting corruption.

The report that was released on January 30, 2024, by the Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII) and the local chapter of Transparency International indicated that Ghana scored 43 out of 100 and ranked 70th out of 180 countries and territories included in the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2023.

The position of the country in 2023 marks the fourth consecutive year of stagnation in Ghana’s anti-corruption efforts, as indicated by the CPI.
