NEDCo disconnects Aliu Mahama Stadium from national grid over debt

The Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) has disconnected power supply to the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium for debt amounting to GH¢466,000.

NEDCo says the facility settling 70% of its debt will be the prerequisite for reconnecting it to the national grid.

However, the Northern Regional Director of the National Sports Authority, Salamatu Alhassan says the facility will pay off what they owe as funds need to be supplied from the centralised level.

“I have sent a letter to the head office via the ministries and so if you can give us, some two weeks, the ministry will settle that debt.”

Real Tamale United and Tamale City play their home games at the Aliu Mahama Stadium. On the weekend of April 22, both teams travel, with one visiting Kotoku Royals and the other Great Olympics.

But immediately after, they’ll return to their home grounds for their Karela and Hearts of Oak games.

The powerhouse has asked its customers to settle their debts or be disconnected from the grid.

According to the state-owned company, it risks shutting down if they are unable to clear an outstanding $1 billion owed to some Independent Power Producers (IPP) hence the revenue mobilisation drive.

So far, ECG has recovered 2.5 billion cedis out of the 5.7 billion cedis in debt since this national exercise began.
