New CI first step by the EC to rig 2024 elections – Sammy Gyamfi

The National Communication Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi says it is apparent that the real intention behind the new Constitution Instrument (CI) seeking to make Ghana Card the sole identification document for voter registration is to rig the 2024 election and nothing more.

According to him, studying the proposed CI the Electoral Commission has laid before Parliament he believes without a shred of doubt that it is the first step in the plot by the Jean Mensa-led EC to rig the 2024 general elections.

“I have taken the time to study the newly proposed CI that the EC is seeking to lay before Parliament in good detail and it is very clear to me that the real intention behind this CI is to rig the 2024 election and nothing more,” Mr. Gyamfi said.

Appearing as a pundit on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV on March 2, 2023, Sammy Gyamfi criticized the Electoral Commission of Ghana, arguing that the new CI seeks to suppress and deprive many qualified voters of their right to vote.

Mr. Gyamfi also asserted that the new CI would allow elections to be rigged through fraudulent registration because political parties cannot verify and ascertain the process.

“The newly proposed CI seeks to achieve two things, Number one is to suppress and disenfranchise many eligible voters and Number two is the new proposed CI seeks to enable the rigging of the election through fraudulent registrations that political parties cannot check,” He stated

The NDC National Communication Officer further branded the EC chairperson Jean Mensa a liar costing the democracy and stability of the country.

“The woman is just lying and I cannot for the life of me understand why a woman who has been promoted to such a high office, such an important office, very crucial to the democracy and stability of this country will tog with the peace and stability of this country by peddling such falsehood,” he noted.

The Electoral Commission has submitted a Constitutional Instrument (CI) in Parliament to make Ghana Card the only requirement for the voter registration exercise, saying it is still the valid and surest way to rid the register of minors and foreigners.

“Once you present your Ghana Card and successfully register as a voter, you will be issued with a voter’s identification card which bears the code of your region, your district, your electoral area, and the name of your polling station, the Ghana Card does not have these features and, therefore, it will not be used to vote in the 2024 general elections,” Jean Mensa told Parliament on Tuesday, February 28, 2023.

According to Jean Mensa, the adoption of the Ghana Card as the sole identification document for voter ID registration will prevent non-citizens and minors from clandestinely going through the registration process.
