NUGS To Hold Protest Against The Capping Of GetFund At Parliament Today

In an attempt to register their displeasure against the capping of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND), the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) is set to organize a protest today, Thursday, March 16, 2023.

According to NUGS, the capping on GETFUND is denying the fund the needed resources to undertake education-related development across the country.

In a statement released by NUGS, the students’ front cannot fathom why the government will cap the statutory fund and divert the resources to other areas hence improverishing the education sector.

The protest, NUGS says will be a Placard Holding Event which will take place at Parliament House today from 8 am to 12 pm.

Among a number of demands, NUGS will petition the leadership of parliament to call for the uncapping of the fund which will free up resources that can be channeled into the country’s education sector.

“The leadership of NUGS shall process to submit a petition to the leadership of parliament on the same day at the end of the placard-holding protest. The aim of the action is to get parliament to uncap GETFUND to make funds available for education,” parts of the statement read.

The statement co-signed by NUGS President, Dennis Appiah Ampofo Larbi further added that, ” it is the goal of this action to prevent the Ministry of Finance from implementing the GETFUND formula for this year which will see only 39% of GETFUND levy allocated to the fund with the remaining 61% diverted into other areas.”

The Placard Holding Protest organized by NUGS will be joined by other education-relation Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) such as the Africa Education Watch and All Africa Students’ Union.
