Transport Minister summoned by Parliament over planned $20 charges at KIA

The Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Andrew Amoako Asiamah has summoned the Minister of Transport, to appear before the House to answer questions relating to illegal fees to be charged on travelers effective from 1st May, 2024.

The called was made when the Member of Parliament for Tamale South and Former Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu read a letter on the floor of the House that suggest that passengers travelling through Kotoko International Airport is to pay an additional amount of 20 United States Dollars to help cover the cost of baggage belt repairs and other maintenance works.

According former Minority Leader, the letter dated March 11th ,2024 and signed by the Managing Director of Ghana Airports Company Limited, Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, It is “illegal to imposed fees and charges without recourse to parliament.”

He further described it as” totally unnecessary and unavoidable”.

The Minister responsible for Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah has been charged to appear to answer the question on 16th March 2024.
