UG-UTAG Condemns Police Brutalities On #OccupyJulorbiHouse Protestors

In the midst of the controversies surrounding the pressure group, Democracy Hub’s planned demonstration against the government, the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), UG-Chapter is the latest body to express concern over the actions of the Ghana Police Service.

UTAG-UG Chapter is condemning the actions of the police service describing it as unprofessional and an affront to the democratic rights of the protestors.

According to UTAG, the recent strategy of the police to resort to court injunctions to prevent citizens from holding the government accountable through demonstrations is “worrisome and completely unacceptable.”

In a statement released by the association on Friday, UTAG therefore urged all parties and stakeholders in this matter to be circumspect and ensure that the tenets of rule of law which is the foundation of all democracies are upheld.

“We urge the GPS and the justice system to be guided by the law always in the discharge of duties. We are therefore calling on all concerned citizens and stakeholders to condemn such arbitrariness, brutalization, and perceived bias,” parts of UTAG’s statement noted.

The Association further called for a national discourse on this matter to streamline police and judicial exercise of authority.

The first day of the three-day non-stop demonstration by the Democracy Hub dubbed #OccupyJulorbiHouse was marred by the mass arrest and detention of protestors by the Ghana Police Service.

The police say the assembly of the protestors was unlawful following an injunction secured and served to the lawyers of the protestors hence the mass arrest and detention.

Forty-nine (49) protestors were arrested and detained on Thursday. Despite the actions of the police, Day 2 of the protest was held at the 37 Military Hospital area amidst heavy security presence.
