Why Ameri Plant was renamed as Kumasi 1 Thermal Plant – Akosua Manu explains

Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency, Akosua Manu has intimated what prompted the renaming of one of former president John Dramani Mahama’s projects.

Many Ghanaians have raised concerns and berated the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration over the renaming the Ameri Power Plant as Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Plant.

But according to Akosua Manu, renaming of the Ameri Power Plant to Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Plant has become necessary because the former name is synonymous with corruption.

Making appearance on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana on Monday, April 22, Akosua Manu who is also the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary candidate for the Adentan Constituency emphasized that the country is accustomed to naming thermal plants that resonates with it respective places.

“When it comes to the conversation of funfair and renaming, when you go to VRA, what is the plant there called, Kpong. When you go to Takoradi, the plant has a name that is indigenous to the area, so I don’t think it is something that is new.

“The name Ameri stands for corruption, it stands for fraud, it stands for things that we are not proud to go back to,” she said.

The AMERI Power Plant was moved to Kumasi as part of efforts to stabilize the national power grid and address recurring power cuts. The plant has been renamed and commissioned as the Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Plant(K1TPP).
