Calls For Resignation Of New EC Board Members Won’t Succeed – Prof. Gyampo

Political Scientist at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo has cast doubt upon the likely success of the calls demanding the resignation of the newly appointed board members of the Electoral Commission.

President Akufo-Addo last month appointed three new members to the board of the Electoral Commission. The three new chairpersons are Dr. Peter Appiahene, Hajia Salima Ahmed Tijani, and Rev. Akua Ofori Boateng.

But CODEO is calling for the honorable resignation of Dr. Peter Appiahene and Hajia Salima Ahmed Tijani from the Electoral Commission.

According to CODEO, Dr. Appiahene and Hajia Ahmed Tijani are politically exposed and hence not fit for a role at the Electoral Commission.

For instance, Dr. Appiahene is said to be a one-time patron of the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON), implying that his allegiance is with the ruling government.

But reacting to the calls, Professor Gyampo is of the opinion that such calls will not yield any results in the country. According to the Political Science professor, the two are unlikely to resign because that culture is not practiced in Ghana.

“If you call for the resignation of a typical Ghanaian public servant, you will merely be romancing a spoon because the culture of resignation is not ingrained in our psyche unless one is pushed to resign.”

He also stated that some stakeholders are concerned about interference in institutions that are supposed to function as independent bodies.

“People will look at the legitimacy and independence of the commission with some trepidation and when that happens, they are pushed with aggression and defence at all times and see everything that the commission does as wrong even when the Commission means well. We cannot allow this to go on in perpetuity. The EC itself requires institutional peace to be able to carry out its activities else election management will suffer.”
