Commercial sex worker commits suicide over non-payment of service at Buduburam

A commercial sex worker has committed suicide after throwing herself in front of a speeding truck at Buduburam in the Gomoa East District of the Central Region.

The deceased earlier allegedly threatened suicide after having an argument with a taxi driver whom she alleged to have failed to pay after patronizing her.

According to eyewitnesses, the 28 years old commercial sex worker identified as Anabel had a confrontation with a taxi driver at the forecourt of Triple X Hotel in Buduburam in the late hours of Friday, 8th September, 2023.

The deceased accused the taxi driver of having failed to pay her an amount of GHC80.00 after patronizing her service.

The taxi driver however denied the allegation and rather narrated that the deceased had only joined some other passengers to patronize his service and that having reached the camp bus stop which was the original destination of the deceased, she requested for an extra trip to Awutu Beraku.

She however asked the driver to pull over upon reaching a popular hotel in the area.

According to the driver, Anabel, the commercial sex worker now deceased then began framing up a story that he patronized her without paying attracting scores of eyewitnesses who aided in separating the two.

The deceased however threatened to commit suicide after the taxi driver had left the scene.

Eyewitnesses say she claimed to have felt been cheated.

After two foiled attempts by persons who were nearer, the deceased jumped in front of a speeding tipper truck with registration GX 7783- 22 and she was run over as she could not be spotted on time by the driver.

Her remains were conveyed to the ST Gregory Hospital morgue for preservation.

Commercial sex activities within Buduburam otherwise referred to as Liberia Camp is widespread.

Contributing to this is the multinational influence in the community which formerly became a refugees camp.

Two years ago, an attempt to have the camp demolished at the request of traditional authorities about the fact that the refugees camp was formally decommissioned several years back became unsuccessful following several interventions with the major one being that of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Liberia.
