Consequences of coups are dire; the will of the people must always prevail — Collins Adomako-Mensah

Member of Parliament for Afigya Kwabre North Constituency, Collins Adomako-Mensah, has underscored the importance of maintaining a democratic system in Ghana.

Mr. Adomako-Mensah emphasized the need for citizens to believe in the democratic system, explaining that history has taught us consequences of coups are dire.

Notwithstanding, he again expressed that, inasmuch as the will of the people must prevail, lovers of democracy must understand that democracy does not mean leaders must entrench their position. Neither does democracy mean leaders must enrich themselves.

Using himself as a reference, Collins Adomako-Mensah acknowledged the role of the citizens in elections.

“The fact that I am qualified as a Member of Parliament is because 30,000 people within my constituency decided through the ballot box or through their town that I should be there,“ he said on Good Morning Ghana on Metro TV on Wednesday morning.

Collins Adomako-Mensah went on to say that elected officials must respect the position and not take it to enrich themselves or do things that will make the people of his constituency suffer in the long run.

If such happens, the Afigya Kwabre North MP said, will trigger conflict.

“because it gets to a time that the people cannot contain it,” he noted.

His comments come after the Niger coup d’état on 26 July 2023, which has left many West African countries living in fear.

The Niger Presidential Guard detained President Mohamed Bazoum, and Presidential Guard Commander General Abdourahamane Tchiani proclaimed himself the leader of a new military junta.

This was the fifth military coup d’état since the country gained independence from France in 1960, and the first since 2010.
