Ghana Health Service declares outbreak of Meningitis disease

There has been a confirmed case of Meningitis in the country.

The Meningitis case was confirmed in the Greater Accra Region.

The Ghana Health Service announced this in a statement issued on February 20, 2024.

“Meningitis is an inflammatory of the meninges, the covering of the brain and spinal cord. It is most often caused by infection (viral fungal or bacteria). Bacterial Meningitis is caused by several bacteria pathogens but Neisseria Meningitis (NM) streptococcus pneumonia and Haemophilus influenza type B represent the trade cause of over 80 percent of all cases of bacteria Meningitis,” the statement available to Metro TV said.

The Ghana Health Service urged all heads of BMCs to undertake the following actions to ensure that all cases are detected and managed promptly.

“Clinician sensitization, infection prevention, and control measures are in place at all points of care, health education on Meningitis at all points of care, ensuring the appropriate logistics are all in place to diagnose and manage cases, contact tracing, follow-up and chemoprophylaxis for all contacts of confirmed cases and monitor the alert and epidemic thresholds to promptly detect epidemics and respond appropriately,” the statement stated.
