I’m frightened for the future of Ghana  – Kwesi Pratt

Veteran Journalist, Kwesi Pratt Junior, has said that he fears for the future of Ghana.

He made this statement on Metro TV’s Good Morning Ghana show on Wednesday, 12th April 2023 while reacting to the public confidence in the Electoral Commission dropping from 49% to 10%.

He expressed dissatisfaction about the appointment of Dr. Peter Appiahene a known New Patriotic Party (NPP) activist to the Electoral Commission’s board.

“Everybody has a problem. Everybody who is honest and sincere will have a problem with this appointment,” he asserted.

He also suggested appointing a personality like Dr. Appiahene to EC’s board at a time as this is questionable.

“At a time when public confidence in the EC has dropped to 10%, this is the appointment we have made [Referring to President Akufo-Addo appointing the known NPP man to EC]. This guy is brazen – really brazen. I don’t see how in any civilized country which is trying to practice democracy in any part of the world, a man like this will be appointed to the Electoral Commission.”

He questioned his astute should the upcoming election record any dispute and wondered how things would unfold.

“If there is an election dispute, and this gentleman is sitting on the electoral commission, how are we going to resolve it?” he wondered.

Mr. Pratt, however, murmured concern over what the possible outcome would be having a Cabinet Minister, Bryan Acheampong, who has vouched to refuse an opposition party power and a brazen EC as this.

He noted that the only thing one could expect with such an appointment was an uncertain future with the Ghanaian democracy.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in line with Article 43 (1 and 2) of the 1992 Constitution swore in three new members of the Electoral Commission (EC) governing board on Monday, March 20, 2023.

The three included Rev. Akua Ofori Boateng Salima, Ahmed Tijani, and Dr Peter Appiahene.

However, pictures and videos surfaced online alleging in particular that Dr Peter Appiahene is a popular activist of the NPP and has been engaged in TESCON activities at the University of Energy and Natural Resources.
