Chairman Of PAC Calls For Severe Punishment For Lecturers Who Refuse Return After Enjoying Gov’t Scholarship

Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament, James Klutse Avedzi has expressed worry over the refusal of some university teachers who refuse to return to the country after enjoying the government’s study abroad scholarships.

According to the chairman of the committee, the whole purpose of the study abroad policy of the government for university lecturers is for these beneficiaries to return and impact the knowledge they have gained in the country.

But James Klutse Avedzi has lamented over what he describes as the recalcitrant ones who stay back after their programs despite the huge sums spent on them by the government.

He is therefore advocating for stricter and tougher punishments to be meted out to these recalcitrant ones

The chairman of the committee who was speaking to the media at a sitting in Tamale explained that, “those few recalcitrance who refuse to come back and serve should be dealt with severely because the intention of the program is for people to study and come back and impact the acknowledge to our children so if they refuse to return that means the government is losing,” he said.

He further expressed concern over the increasing rate of lecturers at tertiary institutions who use fake certificates to gain employment.

“This particular one affected Dr. Hilla Liman Technical University where the school paid for a lecturer to study abroad who came back with a certificate that turned out to be a fake certificate this is serious and we are told EOCO is handling the issue so we will only urge EOCO to speed up with the issue if that person needs to be prosecuted they should go ahead and do it for people to learn from that,” he said.

Mr. Avedzi advised the various tertiary institutions to be cautious and ensure that background checks are done before they accept certificates of persons who apply to lecture in the institutions.
